Starting a new novel study today in my ENG 2L1 course. Was very disappointed to discover that the entire class had already studied Holes in a previous grade. Many students had read it more than once AND had seen the movie many times. How can I expect these students to be enthused about a novel they are already so familiar with! I was so surprised to discover that all my students were excited about the new unit and no one complained. (a miracle in this class!) I think that it must be because familiarity is comforting to them. They know the characters, plot, action already so they know what to expect. They are often afraid of failure and they tend to fail at activities they try for the first time. Already knowing the novel may be a real advantage. Comments
